3U INNOVEDIATE 2017: Advanced Science Communication Workshop for Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in Research

A team of academics and professionals from across the 3U Partners (Dublin City University, Maynooth University and RCSI) organised a one day workshop focused on developing and improving communication strategies for researchers who wishe to engage the public and patients as active stakeholders in their research.

Key note speakers included Professor Sinéad McGilloway (Maynooth University), Professor Gianpiero Cavalleri (RCSI). The morning sessions of this workshop covered theoretical and ethical issues of the PPI as well as perspectives from the Organisation and the Patient. The afternoon session focused on practical science communication skills (led by Dr Pádraig Murphy (DCU) and Dr Olga Piskareva (RCSI) and understanding of PPI in funding applications (Mr Hugh O’Reilly, Business Development Executive, The Wheel)

Opening the workshop, Dr Ruth Davis Director of 3U Partnership, welcomed delegates, noting that “The importance of Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in research has been highlighted by many funding agencies and organisations and increasingly, researchers are required to incorporate PPI into their work”.
